HARRISONBURG, Va. – The College of Charleston volleyball team knocked off league-leading James Madison 3-0 (34-32, 25-20, 25-21) at Sinclair Gymnasium on Sunday. With 49 assists in the match, freshman Allison Beckman broke her own record of 44 set on Oct. 10 against William and Mary. She also holds the record for most assists, 68, in a five-set match, which she set on Oct. 16 versus the same James Madison squad.
“I thought we played with a lot of energy and passion,” head coach Jason Kepner said. “That's something we've really been working on and the team took it upon themselves today to take the match to James Madison. That was a really good win for this team.
Krissy Mummey led the way for the Cougars with seven kills in an intense first set. The largest separation between the teams came courtesy of Mummey's third kill, giving CofC an 11-8 advantage. JMU equalized the three-point spread forcing set-point at 24-21, but kills from Melissa Morello and Devon Rachel pulled the teams even and forced extra points. Trailing 32-31, Mummey and Kayla Tronick posted kills before an attack error handed the Cougars the 34-32 win. CofC out-hit the Dukes .408-288 in the frame.
The Cougars (14-12, 6-6 CAA) continued to swing a hot hand as the team hit .344 in the second set. Tronick posted three blocks while Mummey again paced the offence with four kills. CofC trailed the set 13-9 before scoring 16 of the final 23 points including the four straight to take the set, 25-20.
Morello took control of the final stanza, recording seven kills and hitting .778 in the set. For the match, the Cougars out-hit JMU .393-.238. Morello led all players with 15 kills while Tronick finished with 13 and Mummey with 12. Freshman McKala Rhodes made her second career start at libero and finished the match with 15 digs.
