NEWARK, Del. – Trailing the match 2-1, the College of Charleston volleyball team rallied to defeat Delaware, 3-2 (25-27, 25-21, 16-25, 25-20, 15-11), at the Carpenter Sports Building on Friday.
“We didn't play our best volleyball, but we did enough to get the win,” CofC head coach Jason Kepner said. “I was proud of the contributions that we got off the bench. Several players stepped up and did enough to pull us through.”
Maddie Hills entered the match in the fourth set and finished with nine kills hitting .750 for the match to go along with three blocks. Four Cougars – Melissa Morello (11), Britney Vallez (11), Allison Beckman (15) and McKala Rhodes (24) – recorded double-digit digs in the contest; Morello led the team with 25 kills for her third consecutive match with 20 or more kills.
The Cougars dropped the first set following a solid start, which saw the team lead 8-2 early. CofC hit just .059 and fell in extra points, 27-25. Ignited by a 13-2 run, The College took the second set 25-21 after trailing 8-4.
CofC jumped out to a 4-1 advantage in the deciding set but saw that lead turn into a 9-7 deficit. Kills from Mummey and Hills tied the frame before a 6-1 Cougar run ended the match. Mummey finished with 15 kills – a career-high. Freshman Allison Beckman turned in 53 assists.
