CHARLESTON, S.C. – Bre Bolden and Christy Hewatt notched double-digit scoring efforts, but it was not enough as the College of Charleston women's basketball team fell at home to the Dragons of Drexel University on Thursday night, 63-52.
While Drexel's Jackie Schluth led all scorers with 18 points on seven-of-10 shooting, it was Bolden who paced The College, dropping 14 points and grabbing eight boards in 38 minutes of action. Senior forward Christy Hewatt pitched in with 11 points for the Cougars, who shot 32.2% from the field as a team and forced 19 turnovers, but were eventually undone by an efficient offensive performance from the Philadelphia-based Dragons, who shot 46.9% from the floor.
In an evenly played first half it was the Cougars who came out firing first as freshman point guard Shiclasia Brown kick started the action with a deep three-pointer, followed by back-to-back buckets from junior Jacqueline Luna-Castro, as CofC jumped out to a 7-4 lead. From there, the action ebbed and flowed, before Schluth – a senior forward from Medford, N.J. – took control, scoring 12 of her team's next 16 points, to give the visitor's a 30-20 advantage with just over a minute to play in the opening stanza. A late trey from the Cougar's junior shooting guard Shannon Hines saw the deficit cut to just seven at the halftime whistle.
Resilient, the Cougars played well throughout the second half, but Drexel's hot night shooting the basketball continued as the Dragons managed a game-high 15 point lead, 50-35, with 8:18 to play in the contest. A steal and finish from Bolden would bring the Cougars to within six late, but that was as close as The College would come, eventually falling, 63-52.
The win maintains the Dragons hold over second-place in the overall conference standings, while the Charleston currently sits in ninth.
Up next for CofC is a Sunday showdown in snow-covered Boston with the Huskies of Northeastern University. Tip-off at the Cabot Center is set for 2:00 p.m.
