CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sparked by a lights-out shooting performance, the Tribe of William and Mary downed the College of Charleston women's basketball team on Thursday night, 74-42, at TD Arena.
On an otherwise cold low country night, the Tribe set the nets alight on John Kresse Court, catching fire and hitting a season-high 61.8% of their field goal attempts (34-of-55). Leading the way for the visitors was the duo of freshman center Abby Rendle and 2013-14 freshman of the Year, Marlena Tremba – who combined for 31 points on the night. Adding to their hot shooting night, the Tribe was equally bright from three-point land, knocking down six-of-17 from distance.
For the Cougars, it was sophomore Bre Bolden who continued her tremendous season with another 11- point, seven rebound showing, while also chipping in defensively with three steals. Bolden is currently averaging the eighth most steals per game (3.3) of any division-1 player. The Edgewater, Md., native now has at least one theft in each of her last 28 games.
After taking an early lead courtesy of a pair of free-throws from senior Christy Hewatt, the Cougars found themselves down just five, 33-28, with just with 5:04 remaining in the opening half. From there however, the Tribe's offensive efficiency proved too much for The College to bear as William and Mary stretched their lead to 12 at the halftime whistle.
The second half was all Tribe as the Williamsburg, Va., outfit shot 56% from the floor, doubled the Cougars rebounding efforts and forced 12 turnovers en route to claiming their seventh conference win of the season, 84-55.
Up next for The College is a Sunday night showdown with the UNCW Seahawks at TD Arena, where tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. Immediately prior to tip-off, the CofC athletics family will be honoring the accomplishments of the team's four seniors. Stay tuned to CofCSports.com for more information.
