KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's golf team and sophomore Laura Fuenfstueck (Frankfurt, Germany) both finished a rainy and cold day one of the Kiawah Island Classic in third place. CofC, playing at the Osprey Point golf course, shot a 12-over 300 and finds itself in a tie with Western Carolina for third while North Florida and Troy finished in first and second with scores of 297 (+9) and 298 (+10) respectively.
Fuenfstueck, who was named the CofC Harris Teeter student-athlete of the week after her three-under performance in last weekend's tournament, shot a two-under 70 to put her in a tie for third with Agathe Sauzon of Chattanooga. Melania Bajo Geijo of Jacksonville State currently leads the tournament after firing a four-under 68 and Bailey Gray of Samford is right behind her in second after shooting a 69 (-3).
Junior Morgan Webber (Moore, S.C.) finished the day in 29th after she carded a four-over 76 with one birdie and five bogies.
Junior Mary Chandler Bryan (Chapin, S.C.) and senior C.C. Buford (San Antonio, Texas) both shot 77 (+5) to put them in a tie for 41st and junior Louise Olsson (Uddeholm, Sweden) was one stroke behind them at 78 (+6) to put her in a tie for 51st.
“We played extremely well for the first 15 holes today but struggled and gave away too many shots coming in,” CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. “In general, we played well today, we would have liked to finish a little better but we're right in the middle of everything. Laura played extremely well, anything under par in the conditions today is really good. We had a chance to have a great round and we let it slip away which is a little bothersome to me but overall it was a solid round and we're still in position to win this week if we can play well the next two days.”
Day two of the Kiawah Classic will start at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow. CofC will be playing the Oak Point golf course with tee times starting at 10:14 a.m. off of the 10th hole.
