ELON, N.C. – College of Charleston women's tennis relied on its strength in doubles competition to pull off a 4-3 win over CAA opponent Elon on Friday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The match, which began with singles as a result of a rainy weather forecast, was tied at 3-3 when the two teams began doubles play. Senior Samantha Maddox and sophomore Argyriou earned an 8-6 victory over Elon's Olivia Lucas and Bridget Liddell on court two to stretch their win streak to five.
CAA Women's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week senior Jenny Falcone and junior Katherine Schofield clinched the match for the Cougars (11-12, 3-1 CAA) by edging top-seeded Kirsten Ward and Barbora Lazarova 7-5 in a tiebreak to claim their 11th victory of the season. The tandem is ranked 80th in the nation in the latest ITA poll and has now won five straight as CofC's top seed.
The Phoenix (13-7, 1-1 CAA) came out strong at the beginning of the match with wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots. Maddox, who has picked up six victories in her last seven appearances on court one, handed top-seeded Ward a 6-1 first-set loss before falling in the two ensuing sets. Falcone put Charleston on the board with her 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Taylor Casey at the No. 5 position. She has now won five straight singles matches and leads the Cougars with a 14-9 singles record.
Elon's Lazarova stretched the lead to 3-1 with a win at No. 3 singles but the Cougars bounced back with wins at the No. 3 and 6 spots to tie the score heading into doubles competition. After winning the first set 6-2, senior Grace Baker fought off Kamilla Beisenova's attempts to force a third set by winning the second-set tiebreak, 7-5, on court six. On court three, Schofield, who won the first set against Erica Braschi, 6-1, recovered from a second set loss to win a third-set tiebreak and the match. The victory was Schofield's 10th of the season.
College of Charleston continues north for a Saturday morning match up with James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. The Dukes are 12-6 on the year with a conference record of 2-2. First serve is at 10 am.
