RICHMOND, Va. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team defeated VCU 1-0 in overtime to record their first victory of the season. The Cougars (1-1) were aided by freshmen forward Jessica Schifer who blasted her first goal of the season in the 91st minute, less than two minutes into overtime.
“It was an unbelievable match, said head coach Christian Michner. “If you look at the stats both teams played a hard evenly matched game. When you look at shots, touches, 50/50 balls we were neck and neck the whole game. We were really fortunate to get an overtime win on the road.”
Both teams played fairly evenly throughout regulation with CofC putting up 19 shots and VCU recording 17 shots. Each team tallied 11 shots on goal. VCU held a significant advantage with nine corner kicks compared to the Cougars one.
Goalkeeper Lauren Killian (1-1) recorded her first victory this season while tallying 11 saves throughout the match. Schifer led the Cougars with six shots while her and Sarah Blakely each had three shots on goal.
“Jessica played unbelievable tonight. She had a chance in regulation to win for us. I saw a look in her eye going into overtime that she was going to put one in the net. A couple minutes through the overtime she split multiple defenders and placed it in the back right corner. This is a huge win on the road against VCU. We hope this is a stepping-stone and momentum for our program. We want to take this positivity into our game against Radford on Sunday.”
The Cougars will be in action next on Sunday, Aug. 30 when they travel to Radford for a match at 1 p.m.
