MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Despite a 14-3 shot advantage the College of Charleston women's soccer team was defeated by Fordham, 1-0, on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point. Two thirty-minute delays in each half prolonged the match due to lightning spotted in The Lowcountry.
“Obivously we are disappointed right now in losing this match to Fordham,” said head coach Christian Michner. “All credit to the Rams for coming in after being on the road for four days and battling for 90 minutes. I thought for periods of the game we played really well but there was just to long of a gap where we lacked energy and passion. You saw it the last 13 minutes when we came out of the lightning delay with our backs against the wall. We created a lot of chances to score in those last minutes of the game but we were unlucky to find the back of the net.”
The Cougars (3-2) could not crack the puzzle that was Rams goalkeeper Adaeze Obinelo, who pitched a shutout in her first career start. CofC tested Obinelo early and often tallying an 8-0 shot advantage in the first half but could not find the back of the net.
A goal by Kristina Maksuti right after intermission was the game-winner for the Rams. After a foul in the 50th minute, Nicole Bates took a free kick from the right wing into the box that Matsuti headed into the middle of the goal.
The game would be stopped a second time for a lightning delay in the 79th minute, giving the Cougars time to regroup and formulate a new attack. The College would get three shots and a couple corners out of the break in a spirited effort but it would be too little too late.
“All the focus will be on Stetson for Friday night. We will get three good days of training this week before we head down to Florida to make sure our game plan is set and organized on how we want to attack their team. They are a very good squad and it is never easy to win on the road. We will shake off this loss pretty quickly because we have a lot of games ahead of us still to play.”
The Cougars will hit the road for a match with Stetson on Friday, Sept 11 at 7 p.m.
