KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Laura Fuenfstueck (Langen, Germany) carded a 2-under 70 with three birdies in the first round as the College of Charleston women's golf team sits in second amongst the 41-team field at the Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Spring Classic held at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
Fuenfstueck is tied for fourth individually, while senior Louise Olsson (Uddeholm, Sweden) shot even par and is tied for ninth and senior Morgan Webber (Moore, S.C.) is tied for 15th at 1-over. Olsson's first round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 18th.
The hosting Cougars played the first day of the tournament at the par-72 course at Osprey Point and will compete tomorrow at the par-72 course at Oak Point. As a team, they shot 2-over with a first-round 290. Former Southern Conference rival Chattanooga leads the pack at 5-under with a first-round 283 and Coastal Carolina in third with a 3-over 291.
“First off, congrats to Chattanooga,” CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. “They played an awesome 5-under round. My team played very well today as well and we like our position. The whole team played well, especially Laura (Fuenfstueck). That's kind of what we did the last couple of rounds in Peoria last week. I'm happy to see it and that's who we are now. We look forward to playing the next couple of days.”
Tomorrow's second round will be split tee times off the No. 1 and No. 10 holes from 9:15 a.m.-12:00 p.m. (ET) at Oak Point and Osprey Point. The Cougars will once again be paired with Iowa and Coastal Carolina. Live tournament scoring will be available via www.Golfstat.com.
