SOUTHPORT, N.C. – The College of Charleston men's golf team hoisted the Colonial Athletic Association trophy for a third time at the par-72 Founders Club at St. James Plantation.
Next to titles in 2014 and 2015, this one was even more special as the Cougars played for and won another tournament title in memory of their late teammate, Jackson Moore.
Whether it was his name on the bag or initial's on their hats, Jackson's presence was there on Sunday.
For the second-straight year, CofC led the tournament wire-to-wire firing a three-round score of 296-282-291—869 (+5). It was 22 strokes better than runner-up James Madison (+27) as well as third-place UNCW (+29), fourth-place Elon (+31), fifth-place Drexel (+35), sixth-place William & Mary (+40), seventh-place Delaware (+47), eighth-place Towson (+55) and ninth-place Hofstra (+93).
“Today summed up our entire year – adversity,” CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. “We got off to a rough start and just kept grinding. I am so proud of this team. They deserve this championship. We played our hearts out and played for Jack (Moore). We got great rounds today from Parker Derby and William Rainey. We needed them to step up and they delivered.”
Junior William Rainey (Charlotte, N.C.) became the fifth golfer in school history to earn individual medalist honors carding rounds of 71-69-71—211 (-5). He joins a short list to do so next to Daniel Brunson (2002), Bruce McDonald (2003), Josh Lorenzetti (2013) and John Jonas (2015).
Rainey, the Most Outstanding Golfer, was honored on the CAA All-Tournament Team along with junior Parker Derby (Columbus, Ga.), who tied for fifth at 1-over par. Junior Philip Oweida (Charlotte, N.C.) tied for eighth (+5), sophomore Anthony Gabriele (West Palm Beach, Fla.) 12th (+8) and senior John Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) tied for 14th (+10).
“Congrats to William Rainey,” McEntire said. “The CAA could not have a better champion. He has turned into one of the best players in college golf. I am very proud of this team. I know we are capable of going the whole way (to nationals) and can't wait for postseason play.”
Winners of the league's automatic NCAA bid, the Cougars will learn their postseason seeding and regional site as the 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship Selection Show will be aired live on Thursday, May 5 at 9:30 a.m. (ET) on the Golf Channel.
