BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – College of Charleston junior Laura Fuenfstueck (Langen, Germany) remains in contention for an individual spot to nationals after the second round of tournament play at the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Shoal Creek Regional Championship held at the Shoal Creek Country Club.
Fuenfstueck is tied for 15th with a 36-hole score of 75-76—151 (+7). Matilda Castren of Florida State and No. 45-ranked Kacie Komoto of Northwestern share the lead at +1.
“Laura showed a lot of heart today,” CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. “She was a little tight in the beginning of the round, but had a great stretch of holes in the middle and then held it together enough at the end to stay in the same position as yesterday.
“Laura has put herself in position to make a run at earning a spot in the NCAA (Division I Women's Golf) National Championship (in Eugene, Oregon). She will need a great round tomorrow as there are many outstanding players within a few shots of each other.”
No player is even or better for the tournament and the second-round stroke average for the field was 79.15. Fuenfstueck is currently projected in fourth among individuals that would not go to nationals with a team.
The Top 6 teams and Top 3 individuals will advance to nationals tomorrow. Fuenfstueck is two strokes behind the current second-and third-place individual golfers.
There are also 12 players currently on teams not projected to advance to nationals, within five shots of Courtney Zeng of Vanderbilt (+4) – the top individual from a non Top-6 team.
“This regional is definitely a U.S. Open type setup,” Futrell said. “Almost every hole is a battle for par. The course played even tougher than yesterday.”
Fuenfstueck will be paired with individuals Emily McLennan of Chattanooga and Sathika Ruenreong of Toledo and tee-off the No. 1 at 8:15 a.m. (CT) / 9:15 a.m. (ET). Live scoring will be available at www.Golfstat.com.
