BROOKLET, Ga. – In its first show of the 2017-18 season, the College of Charleston equestrians finished as high point team (38 points) at the Georgia Southern-hosted IHSA Fall Show held at Evermore Farm on Saturday.
South Carolina finished second with 36 points and host Georgia Southern third with 28 points.
The Cougars started off the day with 13 points in the over fences section of the show, while USC was a close second with 12 points. In the morning session, junior Hannah Bentz won Novice Fences (Section C).
Sophomore Gabrielle Bernier kicked off the second part of the day with a first-place ribbon in Novice Flat (Section A), while junior Shannon Rice followed that ride up with a win in Intermediate Flat (Section A) and sophomore Annika Vilcins placed first in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter (Section B).
Junior Sammie Barton kept pace with a win in Novice Flat (Section D) and sophomore Elizabeth High secured the victory for the Cougars with a blue-ribbon ride in Walk/Trot (Section B).
"The team rode really well this weekend and they were rewarded for those rides," CofC Head Coach Bob Story said. "We weren't quite as good in the fence classes as I had hoped, but they made up for it with their flat rides. We have two weeks to prepare for the University of South Carolina Show. I was pleased with the results on Saturday and the focus that the team had in the show ring."
CofC will next compete at the two-day South Carolina Show on Oct. 14-15 at Three Fox Farm in Blythewood, S.C.
