PROVIDENCE, R.I. --- The College of Charleston sailing team added another piece to its collection of hardware this season, as the Cougars took home the Sherman Hoyt Trophy with an impressive weekend of sailing. The Cougars also won the SAISA Match Race to qualify for nationals in addition to a seventh-place finish at the Mrs. Hurst against the top women's teams in the nation.
The Cougars finished the weekend at the Hoyt Trophy 10 points clear of second-place Yale with 194 points. Senior skipper Stefano Peschiera (Lima, Peru) and senior crew Grace McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.) sailed to third-place in A-Division with 97 points, while Augie Dale (Pewaukee, Wis.) and Katie Lounsbury (Jensen Beach, Fla.) placed third in B-Division with 97 points.
In the SAISA Match Race – hosted by the Cougars at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex – the Cougars' quartet of Christophe Killian (Newport Beach, Calif.), Jack Thompson (Newport Beach, Calif.), Elizabeth Pemberton (Osterville, Mass.), and Dirk Johnson cruised to a comfortable win to qualify for the ICSA Match Race National Championship, which will be hosted by CofC on November 10-12.
The Cougars capped the weekend with a seventh-place performance at the Mrs. Hurst Bowl, which featured the top women's teams in the nation. CofC finished with 72 points – 15 shy of first-place Coast Guard. Paris Henken (Coronado, Calif.) and Annabel Carrington (White Stone, Va.) accumulated 30 points to place fourth in B-Division, while skipper Alie Toppa and crew Caroline Bracken (Bridgewater, Mass.) compiled 42 points in A-Division.
