WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The first meet of the season was a rousing success for the College of Charleston track & field team, as the Cougars submitted seven new marks on the program's Top 10 Indoor Performance Lists at the JDL College Kickoff Classic.
Simone Harris had a banner day in the throws, moving up to No. 3 in school history in both the shot put and weight throw. Harris' distance of 12.40m in the shot surpassed teammate Asia Johnson by three centimeters, while her toss of 15.14m in the weight moved her past both Tiffany Sisk and Alexis Wilkins. Not to be outdone, Johnson finished seventh in the weight throw, adding more than three meters to her PR with a distance of 15.70m to move her to No. 2 all-time.
The Cougars excelled in the high jump as well, as freshman Laurel Miller jumped 1.65m to take second place and move up to No. 3 in indoor school history. Miller went on to finish 26th in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.68 seconds to crack the Top 10 list at No. 10 in that event.
Leona Burton Rojas had a strong day, vaulting up to No. 6 on the CofC Performance List in the 60m dash with a time of 8.09 seconds. She also finished first among her teammates in the long jump, finishing 15th with a distance of 5.08m.
Freshman Marissa Linkous rounded things out for the Cougars, taking 13th in the 200m dash with a time of 26.30 to debut at No. 5 on the school's indoor performance list.
The Cougars will have over a month off before returning to action in mid-January in a meet hosted by Appalachian State.
