CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston equestrian team will open its spring season at the Georgia Southern Show on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Evermore Farms in Brooklet, Ga.
In the fall, the Cougars finished on top with three first-place finishes and two reserve finishes. For only the third time in school history and since 1983, The College rode to a perfect score (49 points) winning its fall College of Charleston Show on Oct. 24 at Storybook Farms on Johns Island. It also marked the first time the Cougars rode to a perfect score at home under long-time head coach Bob Story.
"We have had three great weeks of practice leading up to the Georgia Southern Show on Saturday," Story said. "If the riders compete at their standard of excellence, then they are unbeatable. Hannah Showell is leading in the Cacchione Cup standings, so she needs to have a really good day to create a little more separation in the point totals. I expect that she will compete at her best. All-in-all Saturday should be a good day for the Cougars."
CofC will have a total of 17 riders in the spring showing including Showell (Ocean City, Md.), a junior competing in Open Flat and Open Fences. Freshman Gabrielle Bernier (Parkton, Md.) and junior Annie Kuniansky (Atlanta, Ga.) also had great fall showings in Intermediate Fences and Open Fences respectively.
The Cougars will be represented in Novice Flat by sophomore Sammie Barton (Colbert, Ga.), junior Hannah Bentz (Boca Raton, Fla.) and junior Rachel Megdal (Athens, Ga.), while freshman Rachel Bernardo (Bristol, R.I.), Ruby Gonzales and freshman Addie Miller (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) will compete in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter.
Others traveling to the event include Elif Caynak (Walk/Trot), freshman Molly Coyle (Novice Fences), junior Christina Hayden (Intermediate Flat), sophomore Avery Jackson (Open Flat), sophomore Sophie Meserve (Intermediate Flat), junior Rio Parker (Intermediate Fences), sophomore Mia Vawter (Novice Fences) and freshman Annika Vilcins (Beginner Walk/Trot/Canter).
The equestrians are currently in first place in the IHSA Zone 5 Region 3 standings (186 points) ahead of South Carolina (130) and Clemson (106). Kuniansky and Hayden have both qualified for Region Finals in Intermediate Flat and Novice Flat respectively.
