Cougars Drop Pair at Palmetto Invitational Saturday

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The College of Charleston beach volleyball team dropped a pair of duals on Saturday at South Carolina's Palmetto Invitational, including a 3-2 heartbreaker to UNC Wilmington before falling to the host and 12th-ranked Gamecocks, 5-0.
The College of Charleston (11-7) got off to a strong start against UNCW (12-8), as Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) and Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) posted a 21-10, 21-18 victory in the fourth flight before Taylor Foley (Agoura Hills, Calif.) and Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) claimed the fifth flight by scores of 21-16 and 21-15 to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) and Krissy Mummey (Hudson, Ohio) dropped a 21-17, 21-17 decision in the top flight, before Riana Brennan (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Maddie Hills (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) fell in a hard-fought battle in the No. 2 slot, 20-22, 21-18, 11-15. Katja Ehlers (Raleigh, N.C.) and Lauren Hollman (Union, Ky.) were edged in the third flight by scores of 22-20, 8-21, 11-15.
In the afternoon session, the Cougars gave everything they had in a 5-0 setback to 12th-ranked South Carolina. Brennan and Hills made their debut in the top flight with a hard-fought 22-24, 13-21 decision, while Rhodes and Mummey fell in the second flight, 21-13, 21-15. Foley and Freed posted a 14-21, 13-21 effort in the No. 5 slot.
The Cougars will return to the sand next weekend with their first appearance at the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Championships in Emerson, Ga. Play will get underway on Friday, April 21 and continue through Sunday, April 23.
