Cougars Go 3-1 At UNCW Beach Blast

WILMINGTON, N.C. --- The College of Charleston beach volleyball team picked up wins over Stevenson, host UNC Wilmington, and Coastal Carolina at the UNCW Beach Blast this weekend, as the duo of Lauren Hollman (Union, Ky.) and Megan Morris (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) placed third in the pairs tournament.
College of the Charleston (8-4) opened the weekend with a sweep of Stevenson on Saturday morning, which included a hard-fought 17-21, 21-10, 15-8 win in the first flight by Maddie Hills (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and Katja Ehlers (Raleigh, N.C.). Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) and Taylor Foley (Agoura Hills, Calif.) cruised to a 21-6, 21-9 victory in the final flight.
The Cougars capped the day on Saturday with a 3-2 win against host UNCW, which included a 21-16, 21-18 victory for McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) and Krissy Mummey (Hudson, Ohio) in the second flight, and a 19-21, 21-16, 15-10 decision for Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) and Riana Brennan (Los Gatos, Calif.) at No. 4. Foley and Freed delivered the decisive tally in the fifth flight with a 24-22, 21-19 win.
On Sunday, the Cougars fell to South Carolina, 5-0, in the morning session. Mummey and Rhodes battled throughout their second flight match, as they fell by scores of 19-21, 21-19, and 6-15. Madison and Brennan pushed their third flight contest to three sets as well in a 13-21, 21-19, 12-15 decision.
The Cougars capped the weekend with a 3-2 win over Coastal Carolina, as The College claimed flights two through four. Mummey and Rhodes delivered a hard-fought 22-20, 17-21, 15-13 victory in the second flight to finish the weekend with a 3-1 mark. Brennan and Madison won 21-17, 21-17 in the third flight, while Devon Rachel (Lousiville, Ky.) and Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) earned a 21-16, 21-15 victory at No. 4.
In the pairs tournament, Hollman and Morris went 4-4 in pool play to earn the fourth seed for the championship bracket on Sunday. After defeating UNCW 19-21, 21-14, and 15-10 to advance to the semifinals, they fell to South Carolina's pairing by scores of 16-21 and 18-21. Hollman and Morris followed with a 21-8, 21-18 win against UNCW to claim third place. Peyton Eisnaugle (Dallas, Texas) and Meghan Murphy (Orange, Calif.) finished in fifth after losing in the quarterfinals.
Charleston will travel to Jacksonville, Fla. for Jacksonville's Dolphin Invitational and Pairs Tournament next Saturday and Sunday, April 8 and 9. The Cougars will take on Jacksonville, North Florida, and UNCW on Saturday, with the pairs tournament taking place on Sunday.
