CHARLESTON, S.C. – For the third-straight week, the College of Charleston men's golf team will face another tough field of competition at the Clemson Invitational to be held on April 7-9 at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls in Sunset, S.C.
The tournament will serve as the last regular-season tune-up for the Cougars before defending their title at the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship on April 21-23 at Salisbury Country Club in Midlothian, Va.
No. 14-ranked and host Clemson is the defending tournament champion and one of four Top 50-ranked teams in the field along with No. 19 Georgia Tech, No. 33 Michigan State and No. 38 Alabama. CofC is looking to secure a NCAA automatic berth this season as it is currently ranked No. 63 in the nation. Boston College, Elon, Furman, Louisville, Navy, SMU, UNCW and Winthrop round out the remaining schools in this weekend's field.
"This is a big week for us," CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "We are currently ranked No. 63 and need to be in the 50s for an automatic NCAA bid. We have not played to our potential this spring, but at times, we have been really good. Our players know what they have to do this week and are looking forward to the challenge."
This will be the final regular-season tournament for seniors William Rainey (Charlotte, N.C.) and Parker Derby (Columbus, Ga.), who have both been members of the program's three-straight CAA Championship and NCAA Regional squads. Freshmen Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.), Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.) and Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.) will also look to move the Cougars closer to their postseason goal this weekend.
Eighteen holes will be played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. CofC will be paired with Navy and Louisville and be the first group off the No. 1 tee in tomorrow's first round beginning at 8:30 a.m. (ET). Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com.
