ATHENS, Ga. – College of Charleston senior Laura Fuenfstueck (Langen, Germany) fired a 3-under par 69 to propel her into a tie for third on the individual leaderboard after 36 holes at the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Athens Regional on Tuesday.
The three-time Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year made five birdies on the day after starting with a bogey on the opening hole at the par-72 UGA Golf Course. Her best stretch of the day was a three-hole birdie streak on the 8th, 9th and 10th. Fuenfstueck finished off the day with a birdie on the par-5 18th.
"Laura had a great day," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "Her game was not great early, but she managed to make some good pars. She really kicked it into gear starting on the 8th. From that point on, she was outstanding. We are looking forward to the challenge tomorrow."
Fuenfstueck shot even par in the first round on Monday and is three strokes back of current leader and No. 8-ranked Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest (-6) and two strokes back of No. 13-ranked Lauren Stephenson of Alabama (-5). She is in a three-way tie for third at 3-under for the tournament with No. 27-ranked Alice Hewson of Clemson and Amy Lee of Baylor. Five other golfers are 1-under par or better in the 96-player field.
"I ended up bogeying a couple holes yesterday that you really shouldn't," Fuenfstueck said. "I had a double on 15 (on Monday) and was a little smarter on the course today. Ball striking was almost better yesterday and I hit it really solid. I still hit it really solid today, but I think I just had a lot of respect on the greens yesterday. Today, I felt a lot more comfortable on the greens. I'm thinking more birdie now instead of par."
The Top 6 teams and the Top 3 individuals not on those teams from the Athens Regional will advance to the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Golf National Championship hosted by Northern Illinois University on May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Fuenfstueck will be paired with Vanessa Ha of USF and Anna Redding of Virginia in tomorrow's final round. She will start off the No. 1 tee at 8:18 a.m. (ET). Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com
Looking To Make History: Fuenfstueck could become the first College of Charleston women's golfer to advance to nationals and only the second-ever in CAA history. Last season, 2017 CAA Men's Golfer of the Year William Rainey, then a junior, became the first College of Charleston men's golfer to advance to nationals as an individual out of the NCAA Tuscaloosa (Ala.) Regional.
Shot of the Day: Fuenfstueck's 8-iron into the par-4 10th hitting it to two feet with honorable mention shots also to two great up-and-downs out of the bunker on the 16th and 17th to save par.
