Masselink Wins Again at Charleston Classic; Hines Paces Cougar Men

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. - Tess Masselink took individual honors for the College of Charleston women, and Declan Hines continued to lead the Cougar men with a third-place finish at the Charleston Classic held Saturday at Johns Island County Park.
Masselink eclipsed a field of 75 runners with a time of 17:50.2 on the 5K course, outdistancing runner-up Heather Stone of South Carolina by more than 33 seconds. The victory was Masselink's second this fall and came within one second of her personal best 5K time of 17:49.29 set last year at the Louisville Classic.
Hines was the top finisher for the men for the third time in as many events this season, covering the 8K distance in a time of 26:22.5 for a third-place finish. Sam Beattie joined Hines in the top 10, placing eighth with a time of 27:14.9.
In the team standings, the Cougar men were second while the women took third.
Joining Masselink as scorers for the women were Kristen Cherry (13th, 19:34.3), Cate Ambrose (16th, 19:45.7), Jasmine Smith (23rd, 20:30.3) and Eileen Vedder (25th, 20:38.1).
Cougar men claimed four spots between 11 and 15, led by Tyler Fish in 11th in 27:27.1. Following Fish were Jack Wedge (12th, 27:28.2), Evan Peirce (13th, 27:28.7) and Ryan Moosbrugger (15th, 27:30.6).
Both teams are back in action Friday at the Royals Challenge in Charlotte, N.C.
