KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The No. 44-ranked College of Charleston men's golf team claimed its second tournament win of the season at the CSU East Bay Deli Classic with a 54-hole score of 3-under par 861 at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Turtle Point course on Tuesday.
The Cougars closed out their fall season on a high note as junior Christian Baliker (Greenville, S.C.) led the team to victory behind a co-individual medalist finish with rounds of 69, 73 and a career-low tying 67. His final round included seven birdies as he tied Isaiah Jackson of Memphis at the top of the 117-player field at 7-under par for the tournament. It marked his first collegiate win of his career.
"Individually, Christian Baliker winning his first collegiate event is extremely deserving," CofC Head Coach Mitch Krywulycz said. "Christian has always been a first-class teammate. To see him believe in himself – and produce a 67 when we needed it – was something I hope he never forgets."
As a team, the Cougars shot 4-under par on Tuesday to win by three strokes over runner-up Memphis (E). Augusta was third (+13), USC Upstate fourth (+14) and Radford fifth (+18) in the 21-team field hosted by Charleston Southern.
"Today was a program-defining day," Krywulycz said. "Not simply because we won, but due in large part to how we won. This victory stands in stark contrast to our first at The Invitational at The Ocean Course, because today came with expectations and a need for patience."
Juniors Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.) and Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.) also turned in Top-10 finishes to contribute to the team victory. Sowell shot a final-round 71 to finish at 6-under par for the tournament and third overall. Dunagan tied for eighth at 1-over par.
"Our guys hung in there as teams took their best shot at us," Krywulycz said. "I'm extremely proud of the way we produced our best golf with our backs truly against the wall. To be seven shots down on the back nine and find a way to win by three, shows how far we have come as a team from the beginning of the semester."
Earlier this fall, the Cougars beat SMU in a one-hole playoff to the win The Invitational at The Ocean Course on Sept. 10 and also placed third overall at the Trinity Forest Invitational on Sept. 25 in Dallas, Texas.
"This was a great way to close out the fall," Krywulycz said. "While we haven't reached our potential as a team, we have laid a nice foundation heading into the winter break."
The Cougars will return to action in the spring at The Schenkel hosted by Georgia Southern on March 15-17 at the Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
