BOONE, N.C. - Eleven College of Charleston athletes set new personal records, including Jenny Martin in both the 55 hurdles and long jump, to lead the Cougars at the season-opening Appalachian Open.
Martin posted a time of 8.51 to finish third in the hurdles and moved into fifth place in school history with a 60-meter conversion time of 9.15. Martin placed sixth in the long jump with a top mark of 5.27m, the eighth-best effort ever by a Cougar.
Chloe Christian tied the school record in the indoor pole vault by clearing the bar at 3.51m, equaling the mark set by Chelsea Taylor in 2010.
Simone Harris and Stephanie Laudien matched Martin for the best finish by a Charleston athlete at the meet, with Harris taking third in the weight throw and Laudien placing third in the triple jump. Harris' mark of 16.50m was a PR and moved her up one spot to second in Charleston history. Laudien's PR jump of 11.18m is fifth in the school record book.
Madeline Weber (13.36m) and Lydia Bussey (13.12m) joined Harris in setting PRs in the weight throw and now rank eighth and ninth, respectively, in school history.
The 55 dash saw three Cougars establish PRs with two moving into the Charleston record book when the times were adjusted to the 60. Lily Nowakowski finished fifth with her 8.02 adjusted time ranking fifth all-time, and Maya Pringle's 8.11 is seventh.
Breanna Tatum also had a PR with a 55-time of 7.77, and she also took fourth in the triple jump (10.98m) and fifth in the long jump (5.28m). Brooklynn Barton (11.45m) and Kimbra Owens (10.37m) had PRs in the shot put, with Barton moving into fifth place in Charleston history.
The Appalachian Open is the lone meet for the Cougars until January 18-19 when they make the first of three indoor appearances at events hosted by the University of South Carolina.
