WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The College of Charleston track & field program closed out its indoor season in strong fashion on Saturday, as the Cougars made an impact at the UCS Invitational at the JDL Fast Track.
The Cougars excelled in the sprints, led by two great performances from freshman standout Marissa Linkous. In the 400m, Linkous shaved nearly a second and a half off her PR and became just the second CofC runner to run a sub-58 second race with a fifth-place time of 57.97 seconds. Later in the 200m, Linkous again turned heads with a personal best time of 26.08 seconds, moving her up to No. 4 on the CofC Indoor Top 10 performance list.
Linkous also helped the Cougars to a fifth-place finish in the 4x400m relay, and along with Holly Driver, Jenny Martin and Hannah Vanderwall, clocked a time of 4:04.95. Elsewhere in the sprints, Driver etched her name at No. 7 on the 400m dash CofC indoor performance list with a time of 59.78 seconds, while Leona Burton Rojas shaved 0.06 seconds off her 60m dash PR with a ninth-place time of 7.97 seconds.
Laurel Miller won the high jump outright with a personal best leap of 1.67m, while Carlee Neel cracked the CofC Performance list at No. 10 with a seventh-place height of 1.52m.
Cate Ambrose had a strong day for the Cougars in the distance events with two strong performances. The freshman shaved two seconds off her 3000m personal best, finishing fifth with a time of 10:18.43, and also cracked the CofC Top 10 Performance List in the mile at No 6 in school history with a time of 5:10.40.
In the throws, Simone Harris moved to No. 2 in school history in the shot put, adding 19 centimeters to her personal best with a fifth-place heave of 12.59m. She went on to claim eighth in the weight throw with a distance of 14.69m, finishing three spots ahead of Lydia Bussey who set a personal best with a toss of 12.76m.
The Cougars will now turn their attention to the outdoor season, which begins on March 16th at Coastal Carolina's Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational.
