Women's Tennis Upends Upstate to Rise to 7-2 on the Year

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (7-2) got back to its winning ways on Friday afternoon, defeating USC Upstate (0-7) by a score of 6-1.

Flight three doubles tandem Laura Arciniegas and Turner Yates pushed their record to 5-1 on the year, blitzing to a 6-0 win to set the tone. Shortly thereafter, Rachel McNeely and Helena Nyikos followed suit with a 6-3 win on court two to secure the point.

In singles play, the Cougars continued their surge in the lower flights, securing the victory over the Spartans with three quick wins. Anastasia was the first finished, winning 6-2, 6-0. Arciniegas (6-0, 6-2) and Yates (6-0, 6-3) followed suit on courts six and five respectively.

Helena Nyikos battled Carol Sigaki to a 7-6, 6-4 win on court one, and in flight two, Christi Woodson stumbled early, but recovered nicely to dispatch Noelia Acuna 1-6, 6-4, 10-6.

The Cougars return to action on Sunday at 2 p.m., remaining on the road to face off against Appalachian State.
