CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's golf team will spend its spring break competing in the 39th Annual Schenkel Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern on March 16-18 at the Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
After two weeks off from competition, the Cougars head into The Schenkel with a tournament win at the Loyola Maryland Intercollegiate on Feb. 25-26 in Goodyear, Ariz. They moved into the Golfstat.com Top 100 rankings with the victory.
The par-72 course will play at 6,962 yards and will be a 54-hole tournament with 18 holes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. CofC looks to improve on its 11th-place finish at the tournament last year.
"I know our team is ready to get back into action after some time off from Arizona," CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "This is my favorite tournament of the year and love the golf course. We made a nice jump in the rankings after last week, and with another good week, we can get closer to the number for an automatic bid to NCAA Regionals."
Florida returns to the field and is the defending tournament champion. The Gators are joined by host Georgia Southern, NC State, Vanderbilt, UAB, Kentucky, Notre Dame, Iowa, East Tennessee State, Mississippi State, Minnesota, Georgia State and Richmond.
The Cougars will start sophomore Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.), sophomore Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.), sophomore Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.), junior Colin Hamilton (Southlake, Texas) and freshman Reed Bentley (Spartanburg, S.C.). Freshman Raphael Geissler (Karlsruhe, Germany) will compete as an individual.
"The key this week is to take advantage of the par-5 holes and don't make big numbers," McEntire said. "If we are able to do that it will be a good week."
The Cougars will be paired with Notre Dame and Iowa in the first round beginning at 9 a.m. (ET). Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com
