CofC Splits Double-Header on Saturday
3/17/2018 7:47:00 PM | Women's Tennis
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (11-7) split its Saturday double-header at Patriots Point, sweeping past the SC State Bulldogs (1-3) 7-0 before falling short against Buffalo (6-3) 4-2.
The Cougars blasted the Bulldogs in quick order in doubles play, winning on courts one and three in just 13 games combined to take the point and move on to singles. Once in singles play, Rachel McNeely, Anastasia Palaska and Catalina Medici all surrendered just one game a piece in some truly dominant performances to seal the win.
Though that match was already decided, Ava Turner went on to win 6-2, 6-2 on court six, Laura Arciniegas took a 6-0, 6-2 win on court five, and Christi "Woody" Woodson finished off the shutout with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court one over SC State ace Andjela Mihajlovic.
The Cougars and Bulls tried to dodge the rainy weather by agreeing to skip past doubles straight in to singles play, but the weather hit just a few minutes into the match, leading to a four-hour delay.
Singles play proved to be a grueling affair once things started up again, and the first match wasn't decided until 90 minutes in. It was Buffalo who struck first, pulling off a 6-3, 6-3 win on court two and a 6-3, 6-4 win on three.
Helena Nyikos stood tall for the Cougars after giving up a first set defeat to UB ace Tanja Stojanovska, rallying back for a gutsy 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win. However, it wasn't enough, as Buffalo exploited a pair of wins in the lower flights to seize the victory.
Though the match was already decided, Palaska put forth a heroic effort in fourth flight action. After winning the opening set against Emel Abibula 7-5, her opponent stormed back to take a 6-2 second set, and pushed out to a 3-2 advantage in the third. Palaska had no quit in her, rallying back to take the lead and ultimately pulled off the 7-5 decision in the third set to grab an extra point for the Cougars.
CofC will take to the road for one match next week, when they will take on the Florida Atlantic Owls on March 22.
