BROOKLET, Ga. – The College of Charleston equestrian team qualified five individual riders to IHSA Zone 5 Finals after competition at the IHSA Zone 5 Region 3 Finals hosted by Georgia Southern on March 4 at Evermore Farm.
The premise is simple – the top two riders in each class at IHSA Regionals advance to the IHSA Zone 5 Finals hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) on Saturday, April 7 in Savannah, Ga.
Senior Rio Parker was one of CofC's five zone qualifiers after an outstanding ride that led to being named Champion in Intermediate Fences. Junior Sophia Meserve claimed Reserve Champion honors in Novice Fences followed by junior Hannah Bentz with a third-place finish in the same class.
Sophomore Ruby Gonzales finished as Reserve Champion in Walk/Trot/Canter, sophomore Elizabeth High Reserve Champion in Walk/Trot and sophomore Molly Coyle closed out the day winning Novice Flat.
"You do not want to finish in third at this competition," CofC Head Coach Bob Story said. "The classes are big and the competition is pretty good. The smallest mistake can cost a rider an opportunity to advance to zones."
Senior Hannah Showell had a tough draw and finished third in Open Fences, while junior Shannon Rice turned in a fourth-place finish in Open Flat. Sophomore Annika Vilcins and junior Jenna McIntosh also competed in Walk/Trot/Canter. Senior Christina Hayden was third in Intermediate Flat.
