NORFOLK, Va. --- The College of Charleston sailing team was awarded the Leonard M. Fowle Trophy in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history after finishing second at the Gil Coed National Championship on Friday at the Old Dominion University Sailing Complex.
Charleston takes home the Fowle Trophy, awarded to the college or university sailing team with the most points based on the composite results of the men's and women's singlehanded, match race, women's dinghy, team race, and coed dinghy regattas. This marks the eighth time the Cougars have been awarded the Fowle Trophy in program history, and the third time in the last four seasons.
College of Charleston senior Stefano Peschiera (Lima, Peru) garnered Skipper of the Year honors, as he, Augie Dale (Pewaukee, Wis.), Katie Lounsbury (Jensen Beach, Fla.), and Grace McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.) each earned All-America recognition. Annabel Carrington (White Stone, Va.) and Elizabeth Pemberton (Osterville, Mass.) were selected as All-America Honorable Mention crew as well.
The Cougars finished Coed Nationals in second place with 193 points – two ahead of third-place Georgetown. Massachusetts Institute of Technology won its first Coed National Championship since 1961 with 136 points, while finishing atop both A- and B-Divisions. Hobart and William Smith Colleges finished fourth with 196 points, followed by Stanford in fifth with 225 points.
Peschiera and McCarthy placed fourth in A-Division with 94 points, and posted eight top-five finishes in 14 rotations. Dale and Lounsbury paced the Cougars to a third-place performance in B-Division with 99 points, while accumulating eight top-five finishes of their own – including a win in race 10.
