
Three Cougars Qualify For Singlehanded Nationals

Mt. PLEASANT, S.C. --- Gerald Williams (Sai Kung, Hong Kong, China) and Benn Smith (Bermuda) finished 1-2 at the SAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship, Kelly-Ann Arrindell (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) placed second in the SAISA Women's Singlehanded Championship, and the Cougars cruised to a 19-point victory at the North Points #2 to highlight a strong weekend for the College of Charleston sailing team.
Gerald Williams delivered a dominating performance at the SAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship on Saturday at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex with an 11-point victory. The senior registered eight race wins out of 10 rotations, and placed second in the remaining two races to finish the event with 12 points. Smith was second with 33 points as both he and Gerald Williams qualified for the ICSA Men's Singlehanded National Championship. Carson Shields (Kemah, Texas) and Augie Dale (Pewaukee, Wis.) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, with 67 and 68 points.
At the SAISA Women's Singlehanded Championship, Arrindell finished second with 22 points to qualify for the ICSA Women's Singlehanded National Championship. The junior Trinidad native collected three race wins from 10 rotations, while finishing second in four additional races. Marian Williams (Sai Kung, Hong Kong, China) placed third with 30 points, followed by Kelly Cole (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) and Kiera O'Reardon (Houston, Texas) with 37 and 43 points, respectively.
The Cougars capped the weekend with their third regatta win of the young season at the North Points #2 in Clemson, S.C. Charleston finished the regatta with 19 points to beat out Clemson's total of 38 points. Sophomore Patrick Eaton skippered the Cougars to 10 points in A-Division alongside freshman crew Natasha Scott Morton, while freshman skipper Pierce Ornstein and freshman crew Adrianna Lee won four of five races to top B-Division with nine points.
Charleston returns to the water next weekend for four regattas: SAISA Match Race on Saturday, September 29 in St. Petersburg, Fla.; Women's Showcase on Saturday and Sunday, September 29 and 30 in St. Mary's, Md.; North Points #3 in Columbia, S.C. on Saturday, September 29; and the Danmark Trophy on Saturday and Sunday in New London, Conn.
