CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) put down a match-high 15 kills, and McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) collected 13 digs to move into sixth on the program's all-time list as the No. 18 (VolleyballMag.com Mid-Major Poll) College of Charleston volleyball team swept UNC Asheville on Friday evening in TD Arena.
"Both setters that went in did a good job of distributing the ball to all the hitters and putting them in good situations," said head coach Jason Kepner. "That's one of our strengths. We have the ability to set anyone at any time and run a really balanced offense, so if someone's off a little bit, someone else can pick up the slack."
College of Charleston (4-4) won the match by scores of 25-19, 25-17, and 25-14 to pull back to .500 for the season, while dropping UNC Asheville to 3-4 on the year. The Cougars totaled 43 kills, 45 digs, and seven blocks while hitting .330 as a team. Charleston limited Asheville to 30 kills, four blocks and a .109 hitting percentage.
"Asheville is a very scrappy team that plays hard, so we were really trying to emphasize the small details of the game in this match," continued Kepner. "That was kind of our expectation to hopefully clean it up and we did a really good job at the end playing very clean."
Madison paced the attack with a match-high 15 kills and hit a blistering .481 on the night, while Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) added six kills and eight digs. Rhodes led all players with 13 digs to pass Cougar great Mary Sabatino for sixth on the program's all-time list with 1,532 career digs.
Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) added five kills and six digs, as freshman Sylvia Duggan (Charlotte, N.C.) chipped in four kills and three digs. Peyton Eisnaugle (Dallas, Texas) contributed four kills of her own to go along with three blocks; Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) dished out a match-high 29 assists.
The Cougars return to the court on Saturday for two matches in the Hampton Inn Charleston/West Ashley CofC Invitational. Charleston will take on The Citadel at 12 pm, and Charleston Southern at 7:00 pm in TD Arena.
