KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – College of Charleston senior Isi Nilsson (Santiago, Chile) shot an opening-round 70 with four birdies and is tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard after the first day of the Kiawah Island Spring Classic held at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Sunday.
The No. 44-ranked Cougars have an "A" and "B" team playing in the 49-team tournament field – the largest collegiate tournament in the country. Nilsson was part of the "B" squad that carded a first-round 291 (+3) and is currently tied with South Florida for fifth. Junior Yuki Nakayama (Kawasaki, Japan) carded an even-par 72 and is tied for 17th.
"It speaks volumes to our depth to have the B team in fifth after the first round," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "Congrats to Isi and Yuki on a great round today. The first group needs to have a bounce back day tomorrow, while the B group needs to keep doing what they are doing."
Junior Anna-Theresa Rottluff (Dusseldorf, Germany) and junior Savanah Goodman (Easley, S.C.), who were both on the starting team for CofC, are tied for 36th individually with first-round, 1-over par 73s. The Cougars' "A" team is tied with High Point for 12th (+8).
Coastal Carolina (-2) has a two-shot lead over second-place Delaware (E) after 18 holes, while Tulsa and Stetson are tied for third (+2). Reagan Jahn of Lehigh is the current individual leader at 4-under par.
College of Charleston "A" will play at Oak Point on Monday and will tee-off the No. 9 through No. 12 holes in the afternoon wave beginning at 1:30 p.m. (ET), while College of Charleston "B" will tee-off the No. 12 through 13 holes in the morning wave at 8:30 a.m. (ET).
