STATESBORO, Ga. – Junior Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.) fired a 4-under par 68 with three birdies and an eagle in the opening round as the College of Charleston men's golf team shares the early lead with No. 50-ranked Mississippi State after 18 holes played at The Schenkel Invitational held at the Forest Heights Country Club on Friday.
The Cougars carded a first-round, 5-under 283 which is tied with MSU at the top of the team leaderboard. Sowell is currently in second and two strokes back of No. 27-ranked Peng Pichaikool of Mississippi State, who is the current leader shooting a first-round 66.
ETSU is two strokes back of the Cougars and Bulldogs at 3-under par followed by Notre Dame in fourth (E), Kentucky in fifth (+1) and host Georgia Southern in sixth (+2).
Junior Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.) shot a 1-under 71 and is tied for ninth followed by sophomore Raphael Geissler (Karlsruhe, Germany) and junior Christian Baliker (Greenville, S.C.), who both turned in an even-par round and are tied for 15th.
"Today was another exciting step in our development as a team," CofC Head Coach Mitch Krywulycz said. "Elite teams find ways to finish well and grind out scores when they may not have their best. That couldn't describe our round today more perfectly. Everyone in our lineup at some point had a tough stretch. They stayed patient and finished the round off in style. Tomorrow should bring some tougher weather conditions and a chance for us to try and jump out ahead of the pack."
The Cougars will be paired with ETSU and Mississippi State in tomorrow's second round and tee-off the No. 1 beginning at 10:30 a.m. (ET). Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com
