AWENDAW, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's golf team carded one of its lowest rounds of the season to reclaim the lead after 36 holes at The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate held at Bulls Bay Golf Club.
The Cougars shot an 11-under par 277 in the second round on Monday behind a career-low tying round of 67 with seven birdies from sophomore Raphael Geissler (Karlsruhe, Germany). He is currently tied for second with Rory Franssen of Missouri at 8-under for the tournament – two strokes back of current leader Charlie Hillier of Kansas (-10).
CofC also got red scores from juniors Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.) and Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.), who shot 68 and 70 respectively. Both are currently in a five-way tie for seventh (-4). Junior Christian Baliker (Greenville, S.C.) was the fourth-counting score of the round with an even-par 72.
It was the lowest team round thus far of the tournament sponsored by the Hootie & The Blowfish Foundation. It also now ranks among the Top 15 all-time lowest team rounds in program history. The Cougars were in fifth after Sunday's first round of play.
Going into tomorrow's final round, Charleston (-14) holds a two-stroke lead over second-place Kent State (-12). No. 20-ranked and co-host South Carolina is third (-11), No. 36 Kansas fourth (-7), No. 41 West Virginia fifth (-2), Missouri sixth (-1), Virginia seventh (E), No. 38 Iowa State eighth (+3), No. 4 Duke ninth (+4) and No. 27 NC State 10th (+5) in the competitive 15-team field.
"Today was a phenomenal round by our team, probably the best of the year thus far," CofC Head Coach Mitch Krywulycz said. "Golf is often a mental test that doesn't always lead to memorable days. However, today was one to savor and enjoy. We got off to a nice start and focused on making as many birdies as a team as possible regardless of bogeys. We will copy that same process tomorrow, and hopefully, it leads to another good performance in front of our loyal CofC supporters."
The Cougars will be paired with Kent State and South Carolina in tomorrow's final group that will tee-off the No. 1 beginning at 8:45 a.m. (ET). Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.BirdieFire.com
