AWENDAW, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's golf team placed third overall with a three-round score of 854 (-10) on the final day of The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate held on Tuesday at Bulls Bay Golf Club.
The Cougars led the elite 15-team tournament field comprised of seven Top 50-ranked schools including No. 4-ranked Duke through the first 36 holes, but No. 20 and co-host South Carolina (-22) shot 11-under par during the final round to capture its fourth team title in the last five years. No. 36 Kansas was runner-up (-15).
The Hootie has annually been one of the top collegiate men's golf tournaments in the country and is sponsored by the Hootie & The Blowfish Foundation. It was the Cougars' second-highest finish at the 15-year-old tournament behind a runner-up finish in 2016.
Last year, CofC placed 10th at the event and have now finished third-or-better as a team on four occasions this season under first-year head coach Mitch Krywulycz. The field also included No. 27 NC State, No. 38 Iowa State, No. 41 West Virginia and No. 48 Ole Miss – all ranked teams CofC finished ahead of along with Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Purdue, Wisconsin, Kent State and Middle Tennessee.
"We played really well this week," Krywulycz said. "We played a great round yesterday, but today was difficult. South Carolina came out of the gates hot on us. They played really well. It was a fun day out here at Bulls Bay. The weather was kind of tough (light rain and strong wind) and probably gave us a couple of good learning lessons leading into the rest of the spring and conference. All-in-all it was a really good event."
Charlie Hillier of Kansas was the Jackson Moore Medalist carding rounds of 67, 67 and 69 for a 54-hole total of 203 (-13). The award for the tournament's individual medalist has been given out since 2016 and is named after the late College of Charleston men's golfer, who was club champion at Bulls Bay and played for the Cougars from 2012-15.
Sophomore Raphael Geissler (Karlsruhe, Germany) turned in a career-best performance placing fourth on the individual leaderboard with rounds of 69, 67 and 72 to finish 8-under par 208 for the tournament. It marked his second Top-10 finish of the season.
Junior Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.) recorded a Top-10 individual finish for the second-straight week with rounds of 72, 68 and 72 to finish at 4-under par and tied for eighth for the tournament. Junior Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.) tied for 22nd (-1).
CofC will close out the regular season at the Clemson Invitational on April 5-7 at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls in Salem, S.C., prior to the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship on April 19-21 at Pinehurst Resort.
