SUNSET, S.C. – In its final regular-season competition amongst a strong tournament field comprised of four of the nation's Top 20-ranked programs, the College of Charleston men's golf team finished a respectable seventh on the final day of the Clemson Invitational held at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls on Sunday.
The Cougars shot 4-under par during the final round behind a four-birdie 70 from junior Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.), a pair of 71s from junior Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.) and sophomore Raphael Geissler (Karlsruhe, Germany) and 72 from junior Christian Baliker (Greenville, S.C.). They put together a 54-hole team total of 862 (-2).
"The positives from this tournament are that we had different people shoot low rounds each day," CofC Head Coach Mitch Krywulycz said. "We are definitely not leaning on one player. We have five guys who at any moment can play a good round of golf. It gives us momentum going into conference tournament play knowing we can rely on these five guys."
Geissler and Sass paced CofC with a tied for 30th individual finish at even par for the tournament. Baliker tied for 38th (+2) and Sowell and junior Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.) tied for 44th (+4) in the 81-player field that included 10 Top 100-ranked players.
No. 8-ranked Georgia Tech won the team title (-52) followed by runner-up No. 9 Duke (-41), No. 14 Georgia third (-34), No. 17 and host Clemson fourth (-28), Virginia fifth (-22) and Connecticut sixth (-11).
Of the Colonial Athletic Association foes in the field, Charleston placed ahead of rival UNCW in eighth (+5) and Elon tied for 13th with Army (+24).
"While we were disappointed with how this weekend went, it gives us a lot of good things to work on," Krywulycz said. "We have two more weeks until conference play and have been around a golf course that we know and have prepared on. It will be a good opportunity for us to go out as a team, play like we have shown several times throughout the season and try to grab another win."
The Cougars will see both teams again at the upcoming 2019 CAA Men's Golf Championship on April 19-21 at Pinehurst No. 8 at the Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C.
