CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's golf team enters the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golf Championship as the top seed and looking for its fifth conference title in the last six seasons led by 2018 CAA individual champion Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.).
Under the direction of first-year head coach Mitch Krywulycz, the Cougars won two tournaments titles during their regular-season slate – The Invitational at The Ocean Course and CSU East Bay Deli Classic.
This year's conference tournament will be held at the par-71 No. 8 course at the Pinehurst Resort, which will play at a distance of 7,088 yards, on April 19-21 in Pinehurst, N.C.
The league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship will be awarded to the team champion, which will come on Sunday after the culmination of the 54-hole tournament.
The Cougars, who are currently ranked No. 60 in the latest Golfstat rankings, will start sophomore Raphael Geissler (Karlsruhe, Germany), junior Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.), Sass, junior Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.) and junior Christian Baliker (Greenville, S.C.). Sowell and Dunagan own the fourth-and fifth-best scoring average in the CAA entering the championship, recording scoring averages of 72.09 and 72.10 respectively.
"Postseason is finally here and Pinehurst No. 8 will provide a great test for our student-athletes," Krywulycz said. "I believe the predicted storms will play a large role in how the course will play. We managed to get in some solid practices at Pinehurst back in February, through trying conditions. I believe this has given our team ideal preparation to produce our best performance this weekend."
Eighteen holes will be played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tomorrow's opening round will be split tee times off the No. 1 and No. 10 holes. CofC will be paired with UNCW and JMU and tee-off the No. 1 beginning at 7:30 a.m. (ET). Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com.
