INDIANAPOLIS – College of Charleston junior Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.) was selected to compete as an individual at the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Auburn Regional on May 6-8 at the Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika, Ala.
She becomes only the fourth women's golfer in school history to qualify for NCAA Regionals as an individual next to Steffi Kirchmayr (2008), Leigh Whittaker (2011) and Laura Fuenfstueck (2016 and 2017). Huskey was also named Colonial Athletic Association Women's Golfer of the Year on Wednesday.
"This is a really big honor," Huskey said. "It was a big surprise. I didn't think I would have the opportunity to go, but I'm really looking forward to the experience. I've always looked up to Laura (Fuenfstueck) and how she played, and now, I get to go individually to regionals just like her."
A two-time All-CAA First Team selection and CAA Women's Golf Championship individual runner-up the last two years, Huskey boasts a team-best 73.28 stroke average. She was named CAA Women's Golfer of the Week three times and was co-medalist at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in the fall to mark her first collegiate career tournament win.
"Victoria has had one of the best seasons of all-time here at College of Charleston," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "She is definitely deserving to go to NCAA Regionals this year. It will be our first time playing at Auburn and that particular course. To be able to go with our team last year (to the NCAA Tallahassee Regional) and to go as an individual this year, it's a special stamp on someone's career."
The Auburn Regional will play host to an 18-team field including top-seeded Duke, Vanderbilt, Florida State, Auburn, Virginia, Furman, Clemson, Houston, Kennesaw State, Alabama, Tennessee, Cal, Maryland, East Carolina, Denver, South Alabama, Albany and Murray State.
Huskey is one of six individuals at the regional site next to Leonie Bettel of Kentucky, Brigitte Thibault of Fresno State, Hanley Long of Middle Tennessee, Monica San Juan of Chattanooga and Anne-Charlotte Mora of Texas State.
The Top 6 teams and the Top 3 individuals not affiliated with those six teams will advance to the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship, which will take place on May 17-22 at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
