
Cougars Claim SAISA Coed, Team Race Championships

WILMINGTON, N.C. --- The College of Charleston sailing team captured a pair of conference titles at the SAISA Coed and Team Race Championships over the weekend to book two trips the ICSA Championships, and turned in a strong sixth-place finish at the extremely competitive Emily Wick Women's.
The Cougars opened the weekend with a come-from-behind victory at the SAISA Team Race to win their seventh consecutive conference title in the team race. After posting a 2-2 record in round one to trail Jacksonville by two wins, Charleston went 3-0 in both the second and third rounds to equal Jacksonville's 8-2 overall record, and win the championship by head-to-head tiebreaker. Jack Brown, Steven Leuck, and Augie Dale skippered for the Cougars with crews Hunter Skinner, Payton Alexander, and Katie Lounsbury.
Charleston led wire-to-wire at the SAISA Coed Championships on Sunday in Wilmington, N.C., and emerged with an 11-point victory to capture its fifth straight dinghy title. The Cougars finished the regatta with 34 points to beat out second-place Jacksonville's total of 45. Dale and Lounsbury sailed to four wins in the first four rotations in A-Division, while Brown and Skinner posted three top-three finishes in the final three races. Leuck and Alexander placed second in B-Division with 24 points thanks to five top-three finishes.
The Cougars capped the weekend with a strong sixth-place finish with 216 points at the Emily Wick Women's in New London, Conn. Alie Toppa and Annabel Carrington delivered one of their top performances of the season with a one-point victory in A-Division. The duo totaled 81 points with eight top-five finishes to beat out MIT and Brown by one. Marian Williams and Liza Toppa combined to skipper the Cougars to 135 points in B-Division with crew Elizabeth Mignon.
The Navy Spring Coed Intersectional awaits the Cougars next weekend on Saturday, April 13, and Sunday, April 14 in Annapolis, Md.
