ATHENS, Ga. – College of Charleston junior Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.) turned in a solid performance at the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Athens Regional on Tuesday.
After a first-round 73, Sowell made two birdies on the back nine to finish Day Two with a 1-under par 70 at the University of Georgia Golf Course. He started out the round with 11-straight pars and is currently in an eight-way tie for 15th (+1) on the individual leaderboard.
"Logan's performance today was one of a high-quality collegiate player," CofC Head Coach Mitch Krywulycz said. "It was full of patient play that included a high amount of greens in regulation and experienced lag putting. This golf course is a fair, true test of golf. The best players will rise to the top of the leaderboard and when Logan plays his natural game that is where he belongs."
Sowell finished better than seven of the 16 Top 100 nationally-ranked golfers in the 75-player field including No. 14 Patrick Martin of Vanderbilt. He is the second-highest individual player at the tournament on the leaderboard behind Billy Tom Sargent of Western Kentucky, who is in sixth at 2-under par for the tournament.
The Top 5 teams and the low individual from non-advancing teams will advance after tomorrow's final round to the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship on May 24-29 at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
"Logan has the ability to string together long runs of stress free pars which are underrated on this layout," Krywulycz said. "If he continues to hit a high number of greens tomorrow, he will give himself a chance to post another good round which will put him right in the mix to advance to his first NCAA Championship final."
Sowell will be paired tomorrow with Jake Mayer of Princeton and Sargent from WKU and tee off the No. 1 at 10:04 a.m. (ET). Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com.
