DALLAS, Texas – Senior Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.) saved his best for last with a 6-under and career-low 65 during the final round as the College of Charleston men's golf team wrapped-up play at the Trinity Forest Invitational on Tuesday at the Trinity Forest Golf Club.
He and senior teammate Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.) both eagled the par-5 14th on the final day. Sass' low round was also attributed to making six birdies throughout the round to finish at 4-over par and tied for 49th. His previous career low was a 66 at the Loyola Maryland Intercollegiate during the 2017-18 season. It was the second-lowest individual round of the three-day tournament.
Senior Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.) was the Cougars' top finisher shooting 72s across the board and tying for 46th (+3). It was the team's first tournament of the fall season after Hurricane Dorian cancelled its season opener with the CofC-hosted Battle at Briar's Creek.
No. 7-ranked Arizona State won the team tournament title (-30) with a four-stroke victory over host SMU (-26). Houston was third (-17), Rice fourth (-7) and Little Rock fifth (-6). CofC placed 14th (+10) – three shots shy of the Top 10. Alex del Rey of ASU was the individual medalist with a 16-under scorecard (67, 64 and 66).
The Cougars will get a break in the action to prep for their next tournament – the Crooked Stick Invitational co-hosted by Purdue and Indiana on Oct. 14-15 at the Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
