COLUMBIA, S.C. – The College of Charleston fell to No. 1 South Carolina by a score of 119-38 in the season opener on Wednesday at Colonial Life Arena.
Taylor Williams led the Cougars with nine points and tied Arynn Eady for team rebounding honors with five. Williams also blocked a shot while Eady came up with a pair of steals.
The backcourt duo of Tyler Collins and freshman Tyler Gray both had five points, and newcomer Chelsea Wooten also contributed five points, including the Cougars' lone 3-pointer, and three added boards.
Seven Gamecocks scored in double figures led by Victaria Saxton with 19 and Zia Cooke with 18. Saxton and reigning national freshman of the year Aliyah Boston both had 12 rebounds as South Carolina held a 73-28 advantage on the glass. The Gamecocks also shot 59.2 percent to 17.6 for the Cougars.
"We played an outstanding team today, and they are No. 1 for a reason. They have a lot of weapons," said Head Coach Robin Harmony. "We have a young team, and our freshmen got a lot of minutes. It was good to see where we're at and where we need to improve."
The Cougars open their home schedule against Wofford on Sunday at 1 p.m. at TD Arena.
