CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston equestrian team prepares to ride in its final regular-season competition at the IHSA Upstate Schools Show co-hosted by Wofford, Furman and Converse College on Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, N.C.
Sophomore Kate Coffey (Westford, Mass.) and junior Beverly Davis (Concord, N.C.) will compete in Open Flat/Open Fences; senior Molly Coyle (Davidsonville, Md.) in Open Flat and Intermediate Fences; senior Olivia Baldwin (Potomac, Md.) in Intermediate Fences; senior Gabrielle Bernier (Parkton, Md.) and freshman Ava Brugger (Bethesda, Md.) in Intermediate Flat; and junior Allyson Pace (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore Winter Hein (Buffalo, N.Y.) in Limit Fences.
Riding in the Limit Flat class will be sophomore Jennifer Haines (Millstone, N.J.), freshman Lauren Katz (Potomac, Md.) and senior Stephanie Hustad (Lansdale, Pa.), while senior Alyson Bushey (Beaufort, S.C.), senior Elif Caynak (Fort Mill, S.C.) and junior Lauren Duffy (Alexandria, Va.) all compete in Novice Flat.
"This is our final show of the regular season and the overall regional championship is for anyone's taking," CofC Head Coach Natasha V. McCarthy said. "This team has practiced hard, they have come together as a unit and they seem (mentally) ready to give it their all this Saturday at the Upstate Show. We are riding for a win."
Katz is entering the ring this weekend as one of three class winners in the team's last competition at the Georgia Southern Spring Horse Show on Feb. 1. She won a blue ribbon in Limit Flat, while Haines placed second in the same riding class.
The Cougars are the defending team champion of the Upstate Schools Show after five equestrians took home blue ribbons and Davis was the individual overall high score champion last season at FENCE. Coyle was the individual overall reserve high score champion.
