KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman Emily Dunlap (Greenville, S.C.) paces the College of Charleston women's golf team heading into the final day of the 53-team Kiawah Island Classic – the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country – held at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Osprey Point and Turtle Point courses.
Dunlap sits in a three-way tie for second shooting 3-under par after 36 holes, one stroke back of current leader Amelie Svejda of IUPUI (-4). She fired an opening-round 68, but went 1-over in the second round.
"Emily did what Emily does," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "She has put herself also in an opportunity to win the tournament individually. She continues to be a consistently great player.'
After a seven-stroke, 18-hole lead at Osprey Point on Sunday, the Cougars had a tough day over at Oak Point. Dunlap carded the lowest round of Charleston's starting five, while junior Jodee Tindal (Rock Hill, S.C.) shot 4-over and is tied for 16th (+1) individually.
"I thought we were out of sorts as a team," Futrell said. "We didn't play well. The good news is, we played really well in the first round, so it keeps us in the running to win the championship. Obviously, we have to take care of some things that we need to do tomorrow."
Boston University (-1) shot 2-under during the second round and leads the tournament field by three strokes over second-place Florida Gulf Coast (+4). CofC is third (+6), IUPUI fourth (+6) and Stetson fifth (+12).
The Top 26 teams will play for the championship at Osprey Point, while teams 27-53 will play for the Flight Championship at Oak Point. Tomorrow's final round will be an 8:30 a.m. (ET) shotgun start on both courses. The Individual Tournament will conclude at Cougar Point with tee times set for 8:00-8:40 a.m. (ET).
CofC will be paired with BU, Florida Gulf Coast and IUPUI and tee-off the No. 1 through 3 holes with all four teams vying for the team title. Live tournament 9-hole scoring will be available at www.Golfstat.com
