Cougars Outlast Tigers in Five-Set Thriller

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Freshman Tynley Smeltzer dropped in a masterful serve for an ace on the decisive point to help College of Charleston outlast Towson in a five-set thriller and split the weekend series with the Tigers on Sunday afternoon in TD Arena.
Charleston (11-8, 4-4 CAA) won the match by scores of 25-21, 25-19, 16-25, 21-25 and 15-12 while accumulating 14 blocks and setting a new program record for service aces in a five-set match with 11. Towson (17-3, 5-3 CAA) finished the match with 63 kills, 73 digs, 8.5 blocks and a .217 hitting percentage. The Cougars ended the day with 43 kills, 61 digs and a .170 attacking clip.
Critical Point
With the score tied at 11-11 in the fifth set, senior Molly Russell and junior Gabi Bailey teamed up for an emphatic block at the pin and spur the Cougars on a 4-1 match-clinching run capped by Smeltzer's ace.

The Cougars will host Hofstra for another crucial series next weekend beginning on Saturday, October 16. First serve is slated for 1:00 p.m. from TD Arena.
