Charleston Splits With Mercer, North Florida Saturday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- Maria Zweig and Ella Reames collected a pair of victories to lead the way for the College of Charleston beach volleyball team as the Cougars split with Mercer and North Florida on Saturday to close out the weekend at the UNF Beach Invitational with a 3-1 mark to open the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars kicked off the day with a sweep of Mercer in the morning session, including straight sweeps at three's, four's and five's. Charleston then fell to an undefeated North Florida team, 4-1, in the afternoon session despite a three-set battle in the top flight and several other closely contested matchups.

PAIR OF THE DAY
Reames and Zweig went 2-0 in the fifth flight for the Cougars, including a 24-22, 21-11 victory against North Florida. The duo opened the day with a 21-12, 21-17 victory to get the Cougars off to a 1-0 lead against Mercer.

NOTABLES

Sky Benjamin and Rebeca Olariu pushed their record to 3-1 in the top flight with a win against Mercer before falling in three sets to North Florida's No. 1 pairing.
The sweep of Mercer was the Cougars' first 5-0 victory of the season and 14^th since the start of the 2019 season.
Kepner now stands at 80 wins since forming the program in 2012.
