KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – In just its third tournament of the spring season, the College of Charleston women's golf team finished runner-up in a field of 41 teams at the Kiawah Island Classic – the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country – on Tuesday at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Cougar Point course.
Senior Olivia Hamilton (Oakenshaw, England) turned in back-to-back low rounds, including a final-round 71 with two birdies on the back nine, to tie for 12th (+6) on the individual leaderboard with senior teammate Jodee Tindal (Rock Hill, S.C.).
After a subpar first round, the Cougars battled back during the final two days of the tournament to place second behind Dallas Baptist, currently ranked No. 1 in the country in the NCAA Division II Coaches Poll.
CofC carded a 54-hole team total of 892, while DBU shot 865 (+1). ETSU placed third (+31), Northern Illinois fourth (+32) and Stetson fifth (+34).
"I thought the team showed a lot of heart to come back after a tough start in this tournament," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "It's tough to have a good finish, after you dig yourself a big hole in Round One. But, the team stuck with it. Congratulations to Olivia Hamilton. She played two great rounds back-to-back, especially a good one today. It was a total team effort and the strength of our team is our depth. It really carries us through at all of these tournaments."
Faith DeLaGarza of Dallas Baptist earned individual medalist honors shooting rounds of 67, 73 and 73 to finish at 3-under par for the tournament.
The Top 20 teams vied for the championship title at Cougar Point, while teams 21-41 played for the flight championship at Oak Point on Tuesday.
UNCG won the flight championship, while Emily Keeling of Lipscomb was the Oak Point individual champion.
The Cougars will take a break this week, before hosting their final home tournament – the Briar's Creek Invitational – on March 15-16 at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek on Johns Island, S.C.
