
Cougars Win Navy, Teal Brackets at UNCW Pairs Tournament

WILMINGTON, N.C. --- Mikaela Dougherty and Lilly Johnson finished first in the Navy Bracket, and Kyra Thompson and Ella Ridinger won the Teal Bracket to lead the way for the College of Charleston beach volleyball team at the UNCW Pairs Tournament on Sunday afternoon. Sky Benjamin and Rebeca Olariu also placed third in the Gold Bracket to cap a successful weekend for the Cougars.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dougherty and Johnson opened the day with a straight-set win over Liberty's sixes before advancing past UNCW's sixth pairing in the semifinal. The duo then rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat UNCW's five's 19-21, 21-18, 16-14 to win the Navy Bracket.
Thompson and Ridinger pushed past Liberty's four's in straight sets before rallying for a three-set win against UNCW's four's to reach the Teal Bracket championship match. The duo defeated UNCW's three's 21-16, 21-15 to win the Teal Bracket. Marie Martinsen and Goei defeated Liberty's three's in the opening round before falling to UNCW's three's.
Benjamin and Olariu earned a bye into the second round as the top seed in the Gold Bracket where they fell to UNCW's two's. The duo then faced and defeated teammates Ella Reames and Maria Zweig in the third-place match. Reames and Zweig opened the day with a straight-set win over Liberty's two's before falling to UNCW's one's, the eventual champions.

The Cougars will welcome Stetson, Georgia State and Tusculum to the Creekside Tennis & Swim Club next weekend for the CofC Beach Classic.
