Late Goal Pushes Coastal Past Cougars
3/4/2021 9:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Despite holding an advantage in shots, the College of Charleston women's soccer team came out on the short end of a 1-0 decision against Coastal Carolina on Thursday night at Ralph Lundy Field.
The teams battled to a scoreless draw for most of the evening, before the Chanticleers (7-6) broke through late in regulation.
With just over five minutes remaining, Loranna Austin took a feed from Megan Brouse and beat Charleston goalkeeper Lindsay Stravolo to the top right portion of the net, to give Coastal the lead.
The Cougars (0-4) made a push following the Chanticleer tally with scoring chances by Leah Deutsch and Olivia Freitas and a pair of corner kicks in the final minute.
"Tonight, we played a hard-working team in Coastal Carolina and credit to them as they found a late winner," CofC Head Coach Christian Michner said. "My team was not very sharp with-or-without the ball this evening.
"We made poor decisions going forward and were hesitant in the attacking third of the field. We've got to find a way to transition from training – to match day environment. And, frankly, we need to expect more of ourselves. It flat out was not good enough tonight."
CofC finished with a 13-9 lead in shots, including 9-4 in the second half, and took seven corner kicks to four for Coastal.
Stravolo played the second half in goal and made one save in relief of starter Meredith Holton, who had two saves in the opening 45 minutes. Ky Hudson had five saves in posting the shutout for the Chanticleers.
After playing three of their last four games at home, the Cougars will be back in action on Sunday, March 7 for a 2 p.m. (ET) game at South Carolina (7-3). The game will be streamed live on SEC Network+.
