Charleston Coasts to 87-59 Win Over UNCW

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The College of Charleston women's basketball team (11-8, 3-5) jumped on UNCW early and never took its foot off the gas, dominating the Seahawks to the tune of an 87-59 win inside TD Arena on Sunday afternoon.
The game served as Alumni Day as the CofC WBB program welcomed back several of its former players. The College also celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Sunday.
The Cougars scored 24 straight points in the first quarter to put the game out of reach early. The win ends a five-game losing streak to UNCW and the 28-point margin marks the largest in a CAA victory for Charleston since beating UNCW 76-47 on January 8, 2017.
Prior to the game, Jenna Annecchiarico was honored for scoring her 1000th career point while Arynn Eady was celebrated for recently passing the 750 rebound mark for her career.
First Half
- UNCW got out to an early 5-1 lead, but Charleston turned up the pressure on defense and cashed in on turnovers. A massive 24-0 CofC run gave the Cougars a 25-5 advantage with three minutes left in the quarter
- The Cougars held the Seahawks scoreless for almost eight consecutive minutes in the opening period
- Charleston scored 18 points off of 15 forced turnovers in the first quarter
- After ten minutes, CofC led 28-11
- Through the first 11 minutes of the game, Madison Taylor had already racked up five steals
- Charleston was able to maintain a large lead throughout the second quarter, then used a 6-0 run to grab its largest lead up to that point, a 45-23 advantage with 2:30 left in the first half
- After one half of play, the Cougars led 47-27. It is the largest halftime lead in conference play for the Cougars this season
Second Half
- The Cougars opened the second half on a 12-5 run, with eight of those points coming from Anika McGarity. CofC lead 59-32 with 4:49 to go in the third period
- After three, the Cougars led 70-48
- McGarity and Annecchiarico combined for all 23 of CofC's third quarter scoring output. McGarity put up 13 in the frame while Annecchiarico added 10
- The Cougars had their largest lead of the game with a little over three minutes remaining, holding an 85-53 advantage
- CofC would coast throughout the remainder of the fourth quarter on its way to an 87-59 win
Team Stats
- The Cougars improve to a perfect 5-0 when holding their opponent to less than 60 points
- The three most recent largest margins of victory for Charleston in CAA games have all been wins over UNCW
- Charleston wreaked havoc on defense in the victory. The Cougars forced 33 turnovers, resulting in 35 points off UNCW miscues
- The 24 steals by the Cougars are the second-most in a game in school history and the most against a division-one opponent
- CofC scored 54 of its 87 points in the painted area
Key Cougars
- Anika McGarity (20), Latrice Perkins (20), and Jenna Annecchiarico (22) combined for 62 of Charleston's 87 points. This is the first time this season the Cougars have had three players score more than 20 points
- Annecchiarico added seven steals, good for the third-most in a game in CofC history
- Perkins's 20 marked a new season high. She also added a season-high in assists with five
- Perkins, Annecchiarico, and Taylor each recorded at least five steals
- Arynn Eady posted her eighth double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and hauling in 11 rebounds
