
Cougars Fall to Drexel in Final Seconds of CAA Opener, 61-60

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The College of Charleston women's basketball team (8-4, 0-1) lost its CAA opener in heartbreaking fashion, 61-60, to Drexel (9-2, 1-0) on Friday night inside TD Arena. The loss ends a five-game winning streak for the Cougars.
First Half
- The Dragons raced out of the gate, scoring the game's first nine points
- Charleston would outscore Drexel 11-8 for the remainder of the quarter. After one, Drexel led CofC 17-11
- Charleston started the second quarter much better than the first, scoring five straight to close the game to just one at 17-16
- After tying the game at 21-21, freshman Grace Abercrombie knifed through the Drexel defense and finished through contact with her off-hand to give CofC its first lead of the game with just under 5:00 to play in the second quarter
- The CofC run would get to 12-0 following Abercrombie's triple with 2:33 to go in the first half. The made jumper gave Charleston its largest lead of the first half, 28-21
- At the half, the Cougars held a 30-27 lead
- Tyler Collins matched her career-high of seven rebounds in the first half alone
Second Half
- The Cougars and Dragons matched each other shot for shot until four straight points from Drexel tied the game at 34-34 at the midway point of the third period
- With the Cougars leading 34-30, the Dragons reeled off a 10-2 run to grab a 40-36 lead with just over three minutes to play in the third period
- With just over a minute left in the third, Latrice Perkins knocked down a triple to give CofC a 43-42 edge and cap a 7-2 spurt
- The game would go to the fourth quarter with the Dragons clinging to a 44-43 advantage
- Drexel would create a 55-49 lead with 5:30 to go
- With just over three minutes to go, Jenna Annecchiarico knocked down a big three to cut the Drexel lead to 57-54
- Trailing by two, Annecchiarico drained a huge three to give CofC a 60-59 lead with 59 seconds remaining
- Drexel would take the lead on a baseline out-of-bounds play with 3.8 seconds to go. The CofC attempt at the buzzer was off and the Dragons escaped with the 61-60 victory
Team Stats
- The Cougars and Drexel both recorded 45 rebounds each
- CofC forced just 10 turnovers, its lowest number generated this season
- Charleston held the Dragons to just 37.7 percent from the field and 12.5 percent from deep
Key Cougars
- Arynn Eady was dominant, going for her fourth double-double of the season. Eady scored 12 points, pulled down a season-high 16 rebounds, and blocked three shots
- Latrice Perkins led the team in scoring with 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting
- Jenna Annecchiarico added 13 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists
- Tyler Collins secured a career-high eight rounds in the game

- The Cougars will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 9 as Delaware comes to town. The game is set for 1:00 p.m. inside TD Arena.
